The lesson: A soundcard is not a replacement for a decent home theatre system. Please Shut the F*ck up, your stupid inbred piece of rotten sh*t. So unless you have a reciever to do the decoding for you (or a speaker setup with onboard DDL/DTS decoding), the best you could get with such a setup is Stereo output. That isn't the main problem the problem is (as I found out myself), that NO SOUNDCARD ON THE MARKET will decode DDL or DTS over an Optical connection while using a typical analog output. You can even still use an analog output with an optical digital input.

(PS3 owners can confirm this themselves easily enough just set the sound output to optical). If you wanted to connect a PS3/360/Sound System to your soundcard, you would almost certainly have to use an optical input to your soundcard, which limits you to 2 channel PCM, Dolby Digital Live 5.1, and DTS 5.1. Higher formats (all 7.1, uncompressed 5.1/7.1 PCM, etc) are only carried via an HDMI connection. Optical outputs can only carry 2 Channel PCM and Dolby Digital Live/DTS (hence, the reason why those are the two required standards). The output is sent directly to the home theatre system, which will almost certianly have a DTS decoder to assign the individual sound channels to individual speakers. Blu-Ray movies are required to have both a PCM track and a DTS audio track. DVD's are only required to have an uncompressed PCM audio track, although almost all contain a DTS audio track.
